Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is confident of adding to his foreign legion by signing free agent Fernando Hierro.

He has held talks with the ex-Real Madrid defender and said that the 36-year-old, who has just spent a year in Qatar, is set to sign a 12-month deal.

"I'm confident a deal can be done. He has a massive pedigree and, despite not playing top football in the last year, will be a great asset," said Allardyce.

"His experience and ability will add much-needed strength to our defence."

The former Real Madrid captain won 89 caps for Spain.

Hierro ist ein charakterloser Söldner, sonst gar nichts. Er hätte vor 3-4 Jahren abtreten müssen, stattdessen macht er sich zum Affen.

Bolton have completed the signing of 36-year-old Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro on a one-year deal.

The centre-back left the Spanish giants one year ago and spent 12 months in Qatar, which means Bolton still need to obtain international clearance.

"He is without doubt one of the biggest names in Spanish football," said Bolton manager Sam Allardyce, who has a track record of signing big-name veterans.

"I firmly believe he can become a star in the English game."

Allardyce, who hailed the signing of Hierro as a "major coup", has in the past lured the likes of Ivan Campo, Youri Djorkaeff and Jay-Jay Okocha to the Reebok Stadium and just missed out on a deal for Rivaldo.

Djorkaeff has now left the Reebok but the signing of Hierro gives Wanderers supporters a big pre-season boost.

The Spanish great could make his debut in Sunday's high-profile friendly against Inter Milan.
