Filling this post is alarmingly simple for Sven-Goran Eriksson. The manager only has to choose from the five Englishmen established in the Premiership. The number will fall further should Norwich and West Brom be relegated, bearing away Robert Green and Russell Hoult with them.

Eriksson's options are dangerously limited already. When required, Nigel Martyn did well, particularly in the 2-2 draw with Greece that took England to the 2002 World Cup finals, but the 38-year-old declines to be part of the squad now unless he is first choice.

The manager did seek to make the most of the goalkeepers he inherited but time has told on them all. The spring went out of David Seaman and he had to be permanently grounded. Eriksson promised to stand by David James after his mistake in this season's 2-2 draw in Austria, but changed his mind within 24 hours over a veteran who will be 35 in August.

The potential of younger goalkeepers has often stagnated. Richard Wright, who had two caps before the advent of Eriksson, is now Martyn's understudy at Everton. The development of the uncapped Chris Kirkland has been arrested by all his injuries at Liverpool and Green has endured a chastening season.

Eriksson now has to invest his hopes in the promising yet relatively untested Paul Robinson, who has at least shed weight to become far more aerodynamic since joining Spurs.

World Cup comparison

Eriksson has no one to match Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas or Petr Cech. He needs Robinson to stay fit and must hope, if the 25-year-old remains at White Hart Lane, that Spurs keep improving so that his store of top-level experience increases.

Defenders

The thought of the centre-backs might have been enough to make Eriksson take the job, if the salary had not already done the trick. He began with his still-preferred partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell and, when necessary, could call in Gareth Southgate or, during the very early days, Martin Keown.

An excellent situation has improved. The back-up to Ferdinand and Campbell reads like the short-list for an award these days, and John Terry may indeed be voted footballer of the year. Ledley King's reputation is still on the rise, while Wes Brown is recovering confidence and Jamie Carragher, now settled in the middle of Liverpool's back four, is a credible performer.

Eriksson is spoilt for choice. If the smoothly effective Jonathan Woodgate ever got fit, what on earth would he do with him? One answer would be to expand the job opportunities by employing three centre-halves but Eriksson is devoted to having a back four.

It will be a trial of management to prevent some of these fine players from becoming sour if they are forever sidelined. Eriksson must also judge whether Campbell's injuries are becoming chronic. Terry would then have to take over as an automatic selection.

The flanks are more of a worry. Gary Neville is one of the best right-backs in international football, but a true deputy is elusive. Danny Mills, who started every match at the 2002 World Cup, is no longer even considered.

On the other wing Wayne Bridge and, in particular, Ashley Cole are well-equipped. The main concern is that none of the full-backs are tall and this aggravates England's difficulties in the air at set pieces.

There is no inferiority complex here and Eriksson would not swap centre-backs with any other country. He does, however, need a recognised alternative to Neville.

Midfield

This is a key area of both potential and debate. Back in 2001 Eriksson was still finding his way, to the extent that Gavin McCann started against Spain and Darren Anderton came on to face Sweden. The manager's investigations led to some lasting solutions, but the search for a convincing figure on the left, which saw Nick Barmby, Steve McManaman, Emile Heskey and Trevor Sinclair all tried there that year, is still unresolved.

Stewart Downing is now the sole left-footed prospect for that position and Eriksson's nagging difficulty is in striking a balance. He could, for instance, do without a genuine wide player if he used the diamond system that narrows the midfield, but he lacks someone for the hold ing role while Nicky Butt toils to regain fitness and form at Newcastle.

The manager has often settled for picking his four best midfielders and cramming them into the side as best he can. With no holding player at Euro 2004, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard took up the central positions and a disillusioned Paul Scholes was shuffled out to the left.

He then took a few more paces and walked away from international football entirely. England will lack the prompter that Scholes, in theory, could have been unless Joe Cole sustains his recent progress.

There has been a sense of underachievement in midfield and David Beckham is often scolded as the symbol of that. The captain is seldom so bad as to deserve dropping but it would ease the strain on Eriksson if he gave a display that harked back to the Old Trafford game with Greece in 2001.

Disquiet expresses itself in a stream of suggestions. Some envisage Shaun Wright-Phillips displacing Beckham but if Eriksson even contemplated such a step he would judge, following his nervousness in the friendly with Holland, that the Manchester City player is not ready.

If he could change anything, it would be the Premiership style that is sometimes made to look embarrassing by opponents with a more clinical approach. Players like Gerrard hit too many speculative passes, lose possession and wear themselves out in the summer heat at major tournaments. When substitutes have to replace them, the drop in quality is marked.

World Cup comparison

It would be pleas ing to see an orchestrator and creator such as Juan Sebastian Verón or Kaka, but that South American style is alien to the Premiership. Eriksson will have to concentrate on making his midfield conserve energy by being more patient.

Forwards

The supply has dwindled. Teddy Sheringham got too old, Robbie Fowler declined, and Emile Heskey, with five goals from 43 caps, is short of credibility. Eriksson has kept on looking, delving far too deep when Michael Ricketts, who is at present on loan at Stoke, made what is bound to be his sole appearance by starting against Holland in 2002.

Others have failed more discreetly. James Beattie is out of the reckoning and Darius Vassell has lost whatever status a specialist substitute enjoys. Eriksson gave Alan Smith his debut almost four years ago, but this week he has been omitted from the party.

In truth, forwards of international calibre are usually scarce and the Swede will not feel particularly disadvantaged. Unless Smith returns or Peter Crouch confounds us all by excelling indefinitely at Southampton, there will be no target man, but Eriksson can hope to develop a different sort of partnership.

There is, in embryo, an exciting blend. The manager will be envied by his rivals simply for having a teenager in Wayne Rooney who has not only limitless skill, but also uncanny strength and an invulnerable self-confidence. Yet Eriksson's luck does not stop there.

Rooney could be the perfect foil for Michael Owen.

The Manchester United forward likes to attack from deep and is capable not only of tying up whole batches of defenders but also of finding Owen in the space that has thereby been created.

Rooney's arrival makes it likelier than ever that Owen will break the England scoring record.

None the less, the rapport is still to develop and it will be unsettling for Eriksson if Owen is picked only sporadically by Real Madrid. There is scant depth in the squad and England are eager to see Jermain Defoe prove himself.

World Cup comparison

No one quite equals Andriy Shevchenko as a scorer and Ukraine might even get to the 2006 World Cup finals. Brazil's situation, with Ronaldo under threat from Adriano, is one to covet too, but England are as well served as most leading teams.
