King linked with Gunners

Tottenham Hotspur captain Ledley King is wanted by Arsenal after reportedly turning down the latest contract offer from the White Hart Lane club.

King's performances have elevated him into the England squad and Spurs are anxious to get their skipper tied down to a new deal.

Spurs have offered him a large increase in wages, but that has been turned down and, with arch rivals Arsenal waiting in the wings, they may have to make a much larger offer.

Executive director Paul Barber says there is no panic though as the 25-year-old skipper is still under contract at the club until 2008 and has expressed his desire to stay at White Hart Lane.

Barber told Sky Sports: "The talks are still on-going with the chairman.

"Ledley still has two-and-a-half years left on his current contract so we still have a bit of time.

"But he is our club captain, a great player and we want to keep our best players at the club."

ARSENAL are lining up a summer move for Newcastle keeper Shay Given.

Arsene Wenger knows he needs a long-term replacement for Jens Lehmann, who is only likely to stay at Highbury for one more season.

And the Gunners boss has been alerted to Given's situation after rumours on Tyneside that the Republic of Ireland star could be ready for a change.

Given has again been outstanding in another poor Newcastle campaign but he turns 30 in April and knows that he needs silverware to complete an outstanding career.

Wenger will find it hard to tempt Newcastle into selling but he will have a major transfer fund in the summer and has made a new top-class keeper one of his priorities.

Auch wenn Lehmann diese Saison toll fängt, wär Given mMn eine enorme Verstärkung für die Gunners. Für mich ist Given neben Cech, Sörensen und Reina der beste Torhüter der Liga.

Das wär natürlich ein herber Verlust, er war immer ein toller Rückhalt, auf ihn konnte man sich immer verlassen. Ob da für Newcastle ein Ersatz gefunden werden kann wage ich zu bezweifeln.

Immerhin ist er jetzt schon fast 10 Jahre hier, aber noch ist es ja nur ein "Rumour", ein Gerücht.

BALLACK ZU CHELSEA !?

Der englische Fußballmeister FC Chelsea soll nach einem Zeitungsbericht den Millionenpoker um Michael Ballack gewonnen haben. Der Kapitän der deutschen Nationalmannschaft werde im Sommer von Bayern München nach London wechseln, berichtete das Londoner Boulevardblatt "Daily Mail" (Dienstag-Ausgabe).

Der Vertrag des 29-Jährigen soll demnach eine Laufzeit von vier Jahren haben und Ballack beim Spitzenreiter der englischen Premier League pro Woche umgerechnet rund 177.000 Euro (121.000 Pfund) verdienen.

Er würde damit laut "Daily Mail" zum bestbezahlten Fußballer der Welt.

Vor drei Monaten noch dementiert

Allerdings hatten Chelseas Coach Jose Mourinho und Vorstandschef Peter Kenyon erst im Dezember ein Interesse an Ballack dementiert.

"Das Einzige, was ich sagen kann, ist, dass Michael Ballack nicht zu uns kommen wird", sagte Kenyon damals.

Hintergrund: Auf Ballacks Stammposition im offensiven Mittelfeld spielt bei den Londonern der englische Nationalspieler Frank Lampard, der hinter dem Brasilianer Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona) bei der Wahl Weltfußballer und zu Europas Fußballer des Jahres 2005 jeweils den zweiten Platz belegt hatte.

Topklubs kämpfen um Ballack

Doch so oder so sind die Spekulationen über die sportliche Zukunft des umworbenen Mittelfeldakteurs Ballack, dessen Vertrag in München am Saisonende ausläuft, damit um eine Variante reicher.

Zuletzt war der italienische Spitzenklub Inter Mailand als möglicher neuer Klub des Profis ins Gespräch gebracht worden. Aber auch Real Madrid gilt weiterhin als Interessant. Bei Manchester United und beim AC Milan soll Ballack ebenfalls im Gespräch gewesen sein.

Nicht zuletzt macht sich allerdings auch der FC Bayern noch Hoffnungen auf eine Vertragsverlängerung Ballacks, der sich selbst bisher alle Optionen offen gehalten hat.

"Wir wissen davon nichts"

Beim deutschen Rekordmeister aus München ist von einer Einigung zwischen Ballack und Englands Champion jedenfalls nichts bekannt.

"Wir wissen davon nichts. Vielleicht ist es eine Zeitungsente, wie so viele in den letzten Tagen", sagte Vereinssprecher Markus Hörwick.

Allerdings müsse Ballack den FC Bayern nicht fragen, bevor er eine Einigung mit einem anderen Verein über einen Wechsel erzielen könne. Hörwick: "Er muss uns über seine Verhandlungen nicht informieren."

Spurs bid for Ruud

TOTTENHAM have made an audacious bid to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The North London club asked Manchester United about his availability.

Spurs are now prepared to offer around £7million in the summer despite having their initial approach rejected.

White Hart Lane boss Martin Jol moved quickly for Van Nistelrooy following the Dutchman’s recent fall-out with United boss Alex Ferguson.

Van Nistelrooy was furious at being snubbed for the Carling Cup final win over Wigan. He was also left out of Monday’s Premiership game against Wigan, with Louis Saha preferred.

Van Nistelrooy, who will be 30 in the summer, has told friends he is becoming disillusioned at United and fears he is being eased out.

Fergie was particularly angry with what he saw as a lack of effort from the striker during United’s FA Cup defeat at Liverpool.

And Fergie knows this could be United’s last chance to cash in on Van Nistelrooy, still the Premiership’s top scorer with 19 goals despite a disappointing season.

Gunners rubbish Becks stories

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has nonsensed claims that Arsene Wenger wants to sign Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham.

The England captain has been strongly linked with a move to North London after Wenger admitted his affection for the former Manchester United man's playing style and attitude.

However, it has been claimed that the comments were the result of a leading question at a press conference with Hill-Wood keen to dismiss the speculation.

"It is absolute nonsense," declared Hill-Wood to The Star.

"Beckham's name has never come up at boardroom level and I would be very surprised if Arsene is interested.

"I am sure he is looking around for players but for which position, I don't know at the moment.

"I don't think going for big names is Arsene's method. He will buy a young player he thinks is going to fit into his system.

"He's not interested in buying a star. We're playing good enough football to fill the new stadium anyway."

Many of the Beckham stories seem centred around the close proximity of the home he still owns to Arsenal's training ground, although a Premiership return cannot be ruled out for the midfielder in the summer, despite his willingness to sign a new deal at the Bernabeu.

It has also been rumoured that The Gunners want a high-profile signing to help mark their switch to a new stadium next season.

Fabregas is still a teenager, of course, and Eboué is just 22, and yesterday it emerged that Arsenal are continuing their aggressive policy of recruiting the best young talent from across Europe by pursuing their interest in French midfielder Yoann Gourcuff.

The exciting 19-year-old, who plays for Stade Rennes, was again watched by Arsenal scout - and former player - Gilles Grimandi on Sunday at his club's league match away to Toulouse. Gourcuff, an attacking, right-sided player, who can operate in midfield or up front, was again in impressive form in the victory and has been tracked for some time by Wenger, who is hoping to close a deal in the summer.

Gourcuff has just one more year on his contract at Rennes and is likely to leave in the summer. Arsenal face stiff competition from a host of clubs in Italy and France, especially Monaco, who have held talks with the French under-21 international and shown him around their training ground. Indeed, Arsenal's opponents tomorrow, Juventus, are also among Gourcuff's suitors, along with Milan, although Wenger's impressive record of recruiting players from Ligue 1 should not be discounted.
