Fuentes fills void for Villarreal

Villarreal CF have reacted quickly to the departure of Juan Pablo Sorín for Hamburger SV by signing another Argentinian defender, Fabricio Fuentes, from Mexican side CD Atlas.

Impressive spell

The 29-year-old, who spent the 2003/04 season at French club EA Guingamp, will pen a three-year deal with the Primera División outfit subject to a medical. The move will end an impressive spell in Guadalajara where Fuentes has become indispensable for Atlas following a transfer from CA Vélez Sarsfield. Capped once at international level, he has also played for CA Newell's Old Boys and Quilmes CA.

Pascal Cygan has revealed he left Arsenal to join Villarreal to please his wife.

The 33-year-old French defender, whom Arsene Wenger bought for around £2.1 million in 2002, decided to leave the club after finding his first-team opportunities increasingly limited.

And while the intervention of his former Arsenal team-mate Robert Pires made the move possible, it was the feelings of his wife that sealed the deal.

"I had a phone conversation with Robert Pires when he went to Spain," he said.

"I knew his new team (Villarreal) was looking for a central defender and Robert knew my wishes. He talked to officials at his club about me and I was asked to come over on his recommendation.

"At Arsenal, I wasn't the substitute anymore. I didn't play. Last season, in the best conditions, I was on the bench; in the worst conditions, I was at home.

"Arsene Wenger understood my situation.

"Did Spain attract me more? Not really, but I didn't want to go backwards by going back to France. Actually, my wife wanted to come here. If I'd signed for another club, I would have put my marriage in danger.

"But I didn't come to retire under the sun, I came to make people talk about me again.

"At the Gunners, I was always the minnow. Here, it's simply the case that the best players play."
